The Hematology Department was founded as a separate independent department by the late Professor G. Izak, shortly after the opening of the Sharett Institute. Prof. Izak was the director from 1963 until his tragic death in 1980, after which Professor E. Rachmilewitz took over this role. Prof. Rachmilewitz directed the Department for 20 years until his retirement early in the year 2000. In April 2000, Professor Dina Ben Yehuda, M.D. took on the role of Director of Department of Hematology.
In order to serve the patient population in the northern area of Jerusalem, a Hematology Unit was established at the Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital.
During 2003, the department moved to its new location on the 2nd floor of the Sharett Institute. This floor includes the two main wings - the Inpatient and Outpatient departments. The construction of the new department was done working closely with architects and planners while paying special attention to the specifc needs of patients, medical staff and nursing staff.
The rooms are spacious and welcoming, with all ancillary services; accommodation and relaxation for families, comfortable examination and treatment rooms, a physician's room, team rooms and a large meeting room. In the framework of these changes, the Apheresis Unit moved to floor -2, adapted to the needs of the unit inclusive of a large and spacious treatment room, a doctors room and a staff room.
