The Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration (CRMD)

The center was established at Hadassah Hebrew-University Medical Center aiming to promote care of patients suffering from retinal degenerations. This is achieved by clinical and diagnostic activities as well as basic research. The center includes three research groups that are using a wide range of clinical and research methodologies aiming to improve our understanding of biological processes involved in retinal function and disease, and to use this knowledge for developing new therapeutic modalities.

The center includes the following research groups:

Prof. Eyal Banin (M.D. Ph.D.) is performing clinical and basic research studies of macular and retinal degenerations. This includes ocular function using electrophysiological techniques, assessment of the importance of oxidative damage in these diseases, and cell therapy using stem cells for retinal diseases.

Prof. Itay Chowers (M.D.) studies age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and uveal melanoma.

Dr. Dror Sharon (Ph.D.) studies the genetics of inherited retinal and lens diseases and the molecular processes involved in retinal development.
