Orthopedic Trauma

The Orthopedic Surgery Departmet at Hadassah University Hospital at Ein Kerem has been listed by CAOS International as a leading center for orthepedic computer-guided surgery and is recognized as a Reference Clinic.

High energy trauma is the leading cause for morbidity and mortality under the age of 40. In Israel, motor vehicle accidents, military victims, terrorist attacks and violence cause the greatest number of casualties, resulting in various types of severe injuries and trauma. In addition to these severe injuries, lower-energy albeit significant skeletal trauma has become more common due to the rise in life expectancy and sports activities among the Israeli population.

Over the past two decades, the Orthopedic Trauma Unit at Hadassah serves as not only the leading center in this field, but also acts as a recognized international training facility for surgeons, medical students and OR personnel through clinical activity, education and research.

Injuries to the extremities, pelvis and spinal column represent approximately 70% of the total number of surgical procedures performed on trauma casualties. Some injuries require urgent orthopedic treatment; preferably beginning as soon as possible after the injury has incurred. The Hadassah Trauma Unit has the ability to treat these orthopedic trauma injuries, 7 days a week/ 24 hours a day, with the availability of fellowship trained senior surgeons. Although acute in nature, complex injuries may require, at times, multiple procedures with a long term treatment plan. This requires the expertise and devotion of an orthopedic trauma surgeon specializing in fracture care.

The major changes that have taken place in surgical procedures and technologies have made possible rehabilitation of various injuries with successful results, improving the quality of life and expediting recovery. However, the treatment of the severely injured patient requires other resources such as intensive care units, advanced medical imaging and the availability of interdisciplinary resources.

Here, at Hadassah Medical Center, we are proud to have on board not only leading Orthopedic Trauma specialists but also the infrastructure that includes up to the minute technologies, equipment, and specialists from all fields available around the clock.

The Orthopedic Trauma Unit is comprised of an experience staff who are well-trained in treating various breaks in the upper and lower extremities, as well as pelvic breaks. The unit is a national referral center for pelvic and socket breaks.
