Neurosurgical Oncology

Neurosurgical Oncology deals with the combined surgical treatment of benign and malignant brain tumors in adults and children. This is one of the most complex fields in neurosurgery and medicine not because of the difficulty of technical surgery, but primarily due to the decision making process, the use of intra-operative imaging and complex computer media, and the multidisciplinary team work. The department is active in several experimental clinical studies for the treatment of malignant gliomas in patients with recurrence of the disease after receiving treatment according to standard guidelines. Hadassah is the only centre outside of the USA to offer advanced delivery of chemotherapy across the blood-brain barrier.

Close cooperation with colleagues in the neuro-oncolgy unit (headed by Prof. Tal Siegel), neuroradiology (headed by Prof John Moshe Gomori), neuropathology and radiation oncology (radiotherapy unit headed by Dr Marc Wygoda) as well as experts in nuclear imaging of the brain make this the most comprehensive and advanced service for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with brain tumors available in Israel today. The Hadassah Interdisciplinary Center for diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors is recognized as a centre of excellence, and the service is equipped with cutting edge technology, including intraoperative computerized navigation, intraoperative cortical mapping and intraoperative MRI.

Surgeries to remove brain tumors of all kinds are performed, including surgery while conscious, sterotactic biopsies of the brain, transplantation of catheters in the brain for chemotherapy treatment and stereotactic radiosurgery for brain tumors.

The multidisciplinary team holds weekly meetings where each case is discussed and treatment recommendations are consolidated. This team accompanies the patient and his family also after his surgery.

Facilities for molecular diagnosis and stereotactic radiosurgery are available next to the Neurosurgical Oncology Treatment Center in a laboratory for diagnosis and genetic characterization of brain tumors. This diagnosis is of great importance regarding determination of further treatment after surgery.
