What is a Stoma?
A stoma is an artificial opening between two cavities (or canals) and the surface of the body which allows the release of urine and feces.
When is a Stoma performed?
- In cases of gastrointestinal tumors
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Trauma
Who performs it?
Hadassah Stoma Care nurses are the best-trained to mark stoma sites. A Stoma nurse is also responsible for adjusting the equipment, and providing nutritional guidance as well as help with adjusting to life with a stoma.
The final incision site is selected and done by the Hadassah Medical Center surgeon once the abdominal cavity is entered and the condition of the bowel is determined
