Barium Swallow


A barium swallow (esophagography) is a medical imaging procedure used to examine the upper GI tract - generally the esophagus and sometimes the stomach. This test can determine various conditions of the upper GI tract, such as ulcers, infections, growths, hernias, acid reflux and more.

Patients swallow a barium solution. The test takes about half an hour. Patients must fast 10 hours prior to undergoing the test. For more information please speak to the unit receptionist.
