A barium enema, also known as lower gastrointestinal series, is a medical procedure used to examine and diagnose problems with the colon (large intestine) such as polyps, severe constipation, tumors, infections and more. X-rays are taken while barium sulfate fills the colon through the rectum.
The exam takes about 45 minutes to complete. Please ask the receptionist how to prepare for the exam.
