Diagnostic hysteroscopy clinic - See & Treat

Hysteroscopy belongs to the 'endoscopy' family of medical procedures, in which a slender tube fitted with a fiber optic camera is introduced into the uterine cavity. Insertion of the optical fiber allows observation of the uterus from within, both for diagnostic purposes and during the course of surgery. The name of the procedure is derived from the Latin words 'hister' = uterus, and 'scopia' = observation.

During diagnostic hysteroscopy, a hysteroscope (optic fiber) of 2-5 mm in diameter and with a length of about 30cm is inserted into the uterus.

Hysteroscopies are performed in the clinic for women without anesthesia. Generally, specialists perform the operation via a vaginoscopic approach, also known as the 'no-touch' technique, that is without insertion of any equipment to the vagina such as a vaginal speculum to view the cervix or cervical instrumentation to grasp and steady the cervix. The vaginoscopic approach allows for virtually no pain and no bleeding. At Hadassah, hysteroscopy is performed in the clinic accompanied by a professional nurse. In the procedure, the uterus is filled with a physiological water solution to enlarge the uterine cavity, an action which lasts only a minute or two.

It is possible to see the course of the procedure on the screen and the findings can be shown to you in real time. At the end of the procedure, you will receive a printed report with findings and recommendations for the future.

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is intended for the following purposes:

  • To diagnose problems of the uterus
  • To confirm results of other tests, such as hysterosalpingography (HSG). HSG is an X-ray dye test used to check the uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • With other procedures, such as laparoscopy to view the outside of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, or before procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C).

We recommend that you come to the procedure with a spouse or companion. Afterwards, you will be able to rest a little in the clinic. You should come prepared with pads because there may be water leakage for several hours. All patients can then return to their routine activities, including to work.
