The Pediatric Rheumatology and Immunology service provides care to children with inflammatory and immune-mediated conditions and their families. We treat children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, Behcet disease, rheumatic fever, vasculitis, scleroderma and other connective tissue diseases, as well as chronic pain syndromes. We specialize in treatment of children with recurrent fever syndromes including familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. We also diagnose and treat children with recurrent infections, as well as complex autoimmune and allergic conditions.
Our medical staff includes two senior physicians with broad experience in the diagnosis and management of rheumatologic and immunologic diseases of childhood. As part of the Hadassah medical system, we work together with physicians from other pediatric sub-specialties to achieve a timely and accurate diagnosis. In addition, we employ advanced immunologic and genetic techniques, including next generation sequencing, to diagnose rare and difficult cases.
Initial patient evaluations are performed by one of our physicians in our outpatient clinics. Multi-disciplinary treatment is provided in the Hadassah Center for Pediatric Chronic Diseases, which has a staff that includes a psychologist, social workers, and physical and occupational therapists. Biologic medications including cytokine antagonists and monoclonal antibody treatments are given under the supervision of our experienced nursing staff when appropriate.
We invite families of children with rheumatic and immunologic conditions to experience the Hadassah difference!
WHAT WE DO IN OUR UNIT
In the Rheumatology and FMF clinic, We treat children who suffer from numerous diseases, in which the immune system is involved and there is a chronic inflammatory process.
The variety of diseases is vast and it includes the following:
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA, JRA)
Rheumatic Fever and other inflammatory complications of a Streptococcal infection.
Various autoimmune diseases:
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
Anti Phospholipid Syndrome
In our clinic, we perform both diagnostic and therapeutic arthrocentesis (Joint Aspiration). The procedure is done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the child's age and the number of joints involved. We inject the anti-inflammatory drug into the joint. The advantages of this procedure lie in its high efficiency , quick results and local influence (most of the medication is in the inflamed joint rather than throughout the entire body).
Another thing we do in our clinic is examine, diagnose and treat recurrent fever in children. The common cause of fever in children is viral infections of different sorts. There are thousands of children in Israel who suffer from recurrent fever due to diseases like Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) and PFAPA Syndrome (which includes both recurrent fever and throat inflammation). Hundreds of children who suffer from these diseases are treated in our clinic. We also diagnose immune deficiency diseases and treat them as well.
In addition, we diagnose and treat children with muscle and skeletal pain of unknown origin, we treat diseases like Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain syndromes.
We also perform an evaluation of the immune system in various diseases.
We treat children from all over the country, from all healthcare services (Kupot Holim), as well as children from all over the world. Children that require treatments which can't be administrated at home can get these treatments in our outpatient clinic. Among these treatments one may find IV steroid therapy, IV Colchicine therapy, IV Immunoglobulin therapy (IVIG), new biological medication such as Remicade, Rituximab, Abatacept, and more. In this setting we also perform diagnostic evaluations, in particular such that require lab tests or evaluation by various professionals who work in our hospital.
In our clinic we also engage in various researches, which examine the causes and mechanisms of Rheumatic Diseases. We also take part in clinical trials, in which innovative treatments and medications are examined.
When coming to our clinic, you must bring to your appointment a Financial Obligation Form (Form 17) from your Kupat Holim, and preferably also a letter from your primary physician.
