Another milestone at Hadassah’s cutting-edge medical center.
Hadassah Medical Center has proudly launched a new center for taste & smell disorders. The new center hopes to help diagnose various disorders as accurately as possible – to allow proper treatment, care and follow up with the appropriate specialists.
Prof. Aframian Doron, DMD heads Hadassah’s Dept. of Oral Medicine, as well as Hadassah’s School of Dental Medicine, explains the importance of the new center, for which he will serve as director, “taste and smell disorders are prevalent within 2% of the general population. Yet, that number balloons to nearly 50% among the senior population (65+). While there are various potential causes for taste and smell disorders, the most common cause isnasal airway obstruction, attributed to nasal polyps.
In addition, other factors may include psychiatric, neurologic, autoimmune, metabolic, endocrine, or neoplastic disorders, as well as side effects from prescription drugs, surgical procedures, chemotherapy, and more. Such disorders can take a serious toll on the quality of life. Aside from the obvious discomfort – the inability to smell or taste limits our ability to identify harmful materials.”
