Minimal Invasive Surgery (laparoscopy)
The Department of Surgery at Mount Scopus is one of the first in Israel to adopt and practice minimal invasive surgery. These procedures are led by Dr. Nahum Beglaibter – one of the leading surgeons of laparoscopic surgery in Israel. Laparoscopy is performed via insertion of a camera and operative instruments to the abdominal cavity through very small incisions. This technique enables to perform practically every surgical procedure and include among others disease of the esophagus and stomach (tumors, achalasia, GERD, diaphragmatic hernias), all types of bariatric procedures, cholecystectomy, bowel and adrenal resection, and inguinal and abdominal wall hernias. The laparoscopic technique has many advantages such as smaller incisions, faster recovery of the GI tract, decreased rates of wound infection, decreased use of analgesics, decreased rates of incisional hernias and lower complication rate. These procedures require advanced and superb technical skills and in fact most of the procedures at the Department of Surgery Mount Scopus are performed by laparoscopy.
Bariatric Surgery (Obesity)
Bariatric surgery is performed at Mount Scopus since the 90’s and enabled the surgeons to gain vast experience with these complex patients and procedures. We routinely perform sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass, and duodenal switch. Moreover, at Mount Scopus there is increasing experience with revisional procedures following failure of previous procedure/s. Besides the surgeons, the bariatric surgery team includes a dietician and a psychologist that treat the patient as a whole. Dr. Nahum Beglaibter and Dr. Ronit Grinbeum are the leading bariatric surgeons in the country and publish their outstanding results and research in many national and international conferences.
Endocrine Surgery
Endocrine surgery includes thyroid and parathyroid surgery, adrenalectomy, and resection of neuroendocrine tumors. These procedures are led by Prof. Haggi Mazeh (Chief-of-Surgery) and require close cooperation with a number of teams, and most importantly Endocrinology. Indications for surgery include benign and malignant disease of these glands. These procedures require meticulous technique and experience and the Department of Surgery at Mount Scopus is the largest center for Endocrine Surgery in the country. Prof. Mazeh is the Chairman of the Israeli Endocrine Surgery Society and his papers in the field are routinely published in the international leading journals.
Colorectal Surgery
Colorectal surgery includes bowel resection for benign and malignant indications, ano-rectal procedures such as anal fissure, fistula, and hemorrhoids or surgery for inflammatory bowel disease. These procedures are performed by Dr. Bilal Alaiyan and Dr. Ido Mizrahi that are highly experienced in this field and the majority of the procedures are performed by laparoscopy. The colorectal team closely cooperates with the Gastroenterology and Oncology teams to provide optimal patient care.
Surgical Oncology
Surgical oncology includes the resection of different tumors at various location. Surgical oncology treats a large variety of patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, sarcomas, melanomas, and others. The treatment of these patients is complex and challenging and therefore encompasses a multidisciplinary team approach with multiple experts that collaborate to improve patient outcome.
Breast Surgery
Breast surgery is led by Dr. Anat Globerman, Dr. Meir Pinto, and Prof. Oded Zamir. Under their guidance the patients are followed from the very first stage of diagnosis until surgery and then referred to the appropriate adjunct therapy. Surgical procedures include local resections, complete mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and axillary lymph node dissections. In cases where breast reconstruction is required the surgical team performs surgery with the plastic surgeons in a variety of advanced techniques.
Hepatobiliary Surgery
Hepatobilary surgery includes surgery of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. These procedures are performed for a variety of indications – mostly malignant – and are very complex. Dr. Arie Arcihe performs these procedures at the highest level using cutting edge technology including ultrasound guided resections as well as tumor ablation.
Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
Abdominal wall hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed procedures in general surgery. These include epigastric, umbilical and periumbilical, inguinal, and femoral hernias. Incisional hernias in previous surgical scars can be complex and challenging. This discipline is directed by Dr. Meir Pinto who trained at world known international centers.
