Prof. Jacob Rachmilewitz is an associate professor at the Gene Therapy Institute. Prof. Rachmilewitz laboratory focus on ways the immune system and specifically macrophages respond to environmental cues and maintain homeostasis. We suggest that macrophages sense a broad spectrum of cellular conditions and respond to maintain homeostasis. As a consequence of these studies, we suggest a broader view of the immune system as a “quality control” system whereby macrophages secrete or express “restorative signals” that help cells exposed to stressful conditions recover and hence help to maintain homeostasis.
To that end, we study the role of CD47:SIRP interaction in facilitating antigen-presenting cells (APC) mediated T cell tolerance. In addition, we study the role of immune system in DNA damage repair under normal and pathological conditions and aging. Prof. Rachmilewitz founded KAHR Medical, which is developing novel immune-based therapeutics to cancer
Prof. Rachmilewitz is an author on 31 papers published in the most prestigious Journals such as Aging, J. of Immunology and Cancer Research.
