FRIEDMAN GIDEON M.D.
Dr. Gideon Friedman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and is a
graduate of the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical School
in Jerusalem, Israel.
After training in Internal and Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Friedman
was trained in Lipoprotein Metabolism, Molecular and Cell
Biology at the Gladstone Foundation laboratories for Cardiovascular
Research at University of California, San Francisco and Human
Nutrition Center on Aging at Tufts University, Boston.
His main research interests are Atherosclerosis and Aging.
He has explored the characteristics and regulatory mechanisms
of Lipoprotein Lipase, investigated various aspects of lipoprotein
receptors especially the receptors for low density lipoproteins,
chylonicrons and macrophage scavenger receptor and studied
the role of apolipoprotein E in lipoprotein metabolism, Alzheimer's
Disease and Brain Injury.
In recent years his main research
is focused on the role of hyperhomocysteinemia and mutations
in the MTHFR gene as a cardiovascular risk factor,
the role of DHEA in aging, Geriatric Assessment, and
how to improve the efficiency of influenza vaccine
in the aged.
Dr. Friedman is the recipient of
several national and international awards and the
author of over 110 publications.
He is currently
Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine,
endowed professor of the Erna D. & Henry J. Leir Chair
in Geriatrics and Gerontology,
and Director of the Geriatric Unit and the Medical Day
Care Unit at Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem.
Since
1996, Dr Friedman has served as Chairman of the Bessie &
Louis Stein International Geriatric Conference on Aging in
the Mediterranean & Middle East and Vice President of
the Mediterranean and Middle East Gerontological and Geriatric
Association.
Since 1999 he has served as chairman of the National
Israeli Examination Board for Specialization in Geriatric
Medicine. Currently Dr. Friedman is a member of the editorial
board of "Gerontology".
