Justin
Silver M.D.
Justin Silver is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg. He trained at Bararagwanath Hospital, Johannesburg
and the Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Postgraduate Medical
School in London where he also received his Ph.D. and boards
in internal medicine. Since 1973 Dr. Silver has been at Hadassah
Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel, has directed the mineral Metabolism
Unit since 1990 and was appointed head of the Nephrology and
Hypertension Services in 2001. His main research interests
are calcium and bone metabolism particularly their abnormalities
in patients with chronic renal failure. He has developed an
internationally renowned research center in this field with
significant contributions to the molecular biology of parathyroid
hormone. Research contributions from his laboratory are the
scientific basis for the treatment of the bone disease of
most patients on dialysis. Recent discoveries in his research
center have lead to the development of collaborations with
industry, for the discovery of new drugs for the treatment
of osteoporosis. Dr. Silver serves on the editorial boards
of seven international scientific journals and is the author
of 125 publications and chapters in books, many of them in
the most prestigious scientific journals. He and members of
his laboratory are the recipients of several national and
international awards. He is Professor of Medicine, Director
of the Minerva Center for Calcium and Bone Metabolism and
Chief of the Nephrology and Hypertension Services. He has
been visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School and senior
scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
