Raphael N Melmed, M.B.,Ch.B., M.D.
Dr Melmed is a graduate of the University of Cape Town Medical
School, South Africa. After working in Zimbabwe and Sweden,
Dr Melmed trained in General Medicine, Liver Disease and Gastroenterology
in the Academic Department of Medicine, Royal Free Hospital
(Department Head: Professor Sheila Sherlock), and then at
the Courtauld Institute of Biochemistry, Middlesex Hospital
Medical School, University of London in the Ultrastructure
Laboratory. His major academic interests over the last 20
years has been in reevaluating the field of psychophysiology
in Internal Medicine, culminating in the publication of his
book this year called "Mind, Body, and Medicine: an Integrative
text" (Oxford University Press). In addition, Dr Melmed
has been researching physiological techniques for quantification
of emotion-related sympathetic activity and is currently combining
these techniques with functional brain imaging to the study
of the regulation of eating behavior and body weight control
in humans. He is currently Associate Professor of Medicine,
occupies the Israel S Wechsler Chair of Medical Education,
is Head of the Unit of Behavioral Medicine in Internal Medicine,
and was formerly head of the Department of Medicine A (rotating
position). Dr Melmed was elected a Fellow of the Royal College
of Physicians (London) in 1987.
