INTRODUCTION
The Department of Medicine at Mount Scopus has a number of laboratories, some involved in basic research, others combining research with clinical services.
The Laboratory of Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis conducts research on: (1) The effect of excess cytokines on lipids and lipoproteins, glucose' fatty liver and body weight regulation in mice. (2) The role of heparanase in lipoprotein metabolism, body weight regulation and atherosclerosis and amyloidosis (experiments in transgenic mice overexpressing the human and chicken heparanase gene. (3) Molecular genetics of cardiomyopathies, colon cancer, and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.
The Laboratory of Renal Physiology conducts experimental research on the pathophysiology of acute tubular necrosis and renal microcirculation.
The Laboratory of Hypertension conducts experimental research on: (1) The role of insulin in hypertension and intra-uterine growth retardation. (2) 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, diagnostic service for patients with hypertension. (3) The role of daytime sleep on blood pressure and mortality and on hypertension in the elderly.
The Laboratory of Clinical Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases conducts: (1) Clinical studies on viral hepatitis and its epidemiology. (2) Clinical studies on celiac disease and its manifestations in adults. (3) Experimental research on fatty liver in rats. (4) Experimental research on bone metabolism in rats with cholestatic liver disease.
