Physicians who have completed an ophthalmology residency in their home country, and who speak English can apply for the glaucoma fellowship offered at the Hadassah University Hospital, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel.
Our fellowship offers hands-on clinical and surgical training, as well as research opportunities in both basic sciences and clinical-oriented research.
The Ophthalmology Department at the Hadassah University Hospital is located in the main hospital in Jerusalem and is unique in its international orientation. We have 5 Israeli residents and in addition, some 10-12 international residents and fellows from all over the world. Our Departmental teaching and grand-rounds are conducted in a mixture of English and Hebrew.
The glaucoma fellowship begins with a period of Hebrew classes where the basic language skills are mastered. During this time, the fellow is also expected to significantly strengthen his/her theoretical knowledge of glaucoma.
The fellowship itself will consist of: 2 clinic days (busy clinics with 20-30 patients per day) and one surgery day (where the fellow will participate in glaucoma, phacoemulsification and combined cases, both as an assistant and as the main surgeon). 2-3 days per week are devoted to research.
One limitation of our program is that fellows at the Hadassah University Hospital are not funded by our institution and hence are encourged to obtain external financial support, usually as stipends, grants or scholarships from their home country or from international organizations.
