INTRODUCTION
The faculty and staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ein-Karem conducts both basic and clinical research. Funding of the research is through directed grants in women’s health, the Salzberg foundation and several government agencies including the Israel Academy of Sciences, the German Israeli Foundation and the Public Committee for the Designation of Estate Funds.
Basic research in gynecology is conducted in an active collaboration with the Department of Experimental Surgery. In this laboratory, novel drug treatments are applied to the study of the induction of growth arrest in ovarian carcinoma cells, the etiology and non-surgical treatment of uterine leiomyomas are studied and a basic research project is underway studying osteoporosis and oxydized low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Further investigations in gynecology and menopause include: Biological vs. clinical effects of phytoestrogens in humans, post-marketing survey of a new hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Development of a new kit for rapid diagnosis of vaginal infections, clinical value of a PH-reducing bioactive tampon, the effect of low-dose melatonin on menopause-associated insomnia, and the effect of Agnus Castus extract on PMS symptoms.
Research in infertility includes studies in effective cryopreservation, an investigation of endometrial receptivity molecular markers, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, azoospemia and the role of aging in infertility. The studies in gamete cryopreservation are aimed at preserving fertility in women undergoing chemotherapy.
Clinical research in perinatology is conducted on external cephalic breech version, urinary tract infections during delivery and the puerperium, and evaluation of fetal effects of febrile disease during delivery, connective tissue disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus and pregnancy, the effect on fetal heart conductive disorders, and the relationship between parity and fertility in women older than 45. In the basic sciences, the role of VEGF and sFLT in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, and immunological components affecting maternal- fetal tolerance are studied.
Internationally acclaimed work in stem cell research is conducted with the Institute of gene therapy.
