INTRODUCTION
The Department of Surgery at the Hadassah University Hospital, Mount Scopus, maintains a Surgical Research Laboratory which trains for M.Sc. & Ph.D. degrees and is also recognized as a basic sciences training site. The laboratory is divided into a Surgical Metabolism section, Gut Neurophysiology section and Surgical Oncology section.
Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition Laboratory: Current research areas include studies on the etiology and potential therapy of total parenteral nutrition-associated liver function derangements and the role of endotoxin, tumor necrosis factor and enteral feeding in liver steatosis and damage; the role of enteral feeding and stimulation of gut hormone secretion in bacterial translocation and the relationship between gut motility and bacterial translocation, and the role of amino acids in surgical nutrition and metabolism.
Gut Neurophysiology Laboratory: Current research areas include: The autonomic nervous system. Electrophysiology of glial cells in the nervous system. Physiology, pharmacology and morphology of the digestive tract in health and disease. Physiology and pharmacology of gut smooth muscle mechanisms of chronic pain. The enteric nervous system. Role of glial cells in pathological changes in sensory ganglia. Interstitial cells of Cajal and the pathophysiology and mechanism of intestinal intussuception.
Surgical Oncology Laboratory: Genetic and molecular profiling of colorectal cancer in young patients. Molecular targets for cancer immunotherapy. Molecular staging of sentinel lymph nodes in breast and colon cancer. Expression of imprinted genes and other transcriptional regulatory sequences in human colorectal cancer liver metastases. Molecular profiling of tumors by tissue micro-array technology & micro RNA profiling of breast and colon cancer.
