INTRODUCTION
The Department of Radiology is dedicated to providing patients with superior diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, working in close cooperation with physicians from all the medical and surgical specialties. This mission is accomplished with the finest in personal service and support, and with courtesy and respect for our patients, using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment.
The Department Medical Staff includes physicians trained as specialists in all the Radiological subspecialties. Most senior physicians have completed fellowships in leading US academic medical centers, and maintain close professional relationships with international leaders in their areas of expertise.
Currently the Department of Radiology is implementing a hospital-wide Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS) that will provide 24/7 access to digitally stored images in departments throughout both Hadassah hospitals. New spiral multidetector CT and MRI systems, and a new digital biplane angiography system have been installed over the last 1-2 years. Approximately 280,000 imaging procedures, including 50,000 CT and 8,000 MR studies are performed annually. The Comprehensive Breast Center screens over 8,000 women for cancer each year, using digital mammography and ultrasound, as well as breast MRI in women at high risk of disease. More than 800 adults at high risk of developing lung cancer have been screened under the International Lung Cancer Action Project (I-ELCAP).
The Department offers a rigorous, innovative training program for young physicians specializing in Radiology, and actively participates in the multidisciplinary education of medical students enrolled in the Hebrew University – Hadassah School of Medicine. Members of the Department are leaders in education and Radiology Board Certification at the national level.
In addition, the Department maintains its academic leadership by conducting clinical and scientific research that is recognized at the national and international level. Under the leadership of Professor Eugene Libson, five research laboratories and infrastructure for state-of-the-art, grant-funded research have been established over the last two years. A new basic research collaboration with Philips Medical Systems resulted in a laboratory to study dual energy CT techniques using an experimental scanner that the first of its kind in the world. The bilateral Harvard – Hadassah radiology initiative was recently launched to facilitate basic research. Animal studies in hyperpolarization and MR angiography recently commenced at Hadassah under this initiative.
