INTRODUCTION

The pediatric infectious disease team deals with a variety of bacterial, viral and fungal infections, in all the spectrum of pediatrics, and particularly in the immunodeficient children. The Pediatric AIDS Center at Hadassah University Hospital is a unique center in Israel consisting of a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, a nurse, a pharmacist, a social worker, a psychologist, a nutritionist, a case manager, and numerous consultants who are experts in a variety of medical fields. ART-JOY-LOVE is a Pediatric AIDS program in Ethiopia run by the Hadassah Pediatric AIDS Center in Jerusalem.  We treat HIV/AIDS orphans with antiretroviral therapy (ART)  and those with other medical conditions, and dispense Joy and Love to compensate for the lack of it.  Our mission is to volunteer and go to Ethiopian orphanages and to assist the local teams by providing medical care, including antiretroviral therapy (ART), Joy and Love to the HIV/AIDS children.

Pediatric Critical Care is provided by the PICU, a multi-disciplinary 8-bed unit located at the Ein Kerem hospital. This unit provides care for all children from newborn to 14 years old. The patient population includes children with critical medical problems (severe infections, cardiac and respiratory failures etc.), children with severe trauma and those who underwent complex operations such as open-heart surgery, oncological surgery and more.

The unit is directed by two board certified internists who trained in North America supported by fellows and rotating residents from both Pediatric departments and the department of Anesthesia.

INTRODUCTION

The Pediatric Pulmonology unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem is unique in its ability to diagnose and treat all types of lung diseases in children of all ages. The Infant Lung Laboratory headed by Dr. Bar-Yishay is the only laboratory in Israel and one of the few in the world that performs sophisticated lung function tests in infants allowing us to define and differentiate between the varieties of lung problems in this age group.

The Pediatric Bronchoscopy Service is equipped to undertake diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies in children with all the necessary monitoring, safety and support services.  We are the referral center in Israel for the removal of complex foreign bodies aspirated by young children. The Institute is equipped with laboratories for the measurement of lung function and bronchial reactivity in children and infants and can undertake all the necessary measurements to ensure accurate diagnosis and follow-up of patients with lung disease and asthma. We also perform cardio-respiratory exercise test which can differentiate between cardiac and pulmonary diseases resulting from exercise intolerance.

INTRODUCTION

The Metabolic Disease Unit consists of service and research laboratories, out-patient clinics and in-patient clinical services. Patients from all over the country and region are referred to this unit for diagnosis and treatment. The service and research activities are interconnected, and patients examined in the clinic are investigated in three different laboratories encompassing the Unit: the Metabolites Laboratory, the Enzymology Laboratory, and the Molecular Biology Laboratory. Findings emanating from the laboratories then initiate a research effort, including the identification of disease-causing genes and research aimed towards elucidation of the underlying pathophysiology.

The characterization of the defective function contributes to illuminate the normality and to promote the development of treatments. Most research activities are externally funded by the Israeli Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Science and Technology (binational French-Israeli collaboration) and the Israel Science Foundation.

INTRODUCTION

The Pediatrics Department at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, Mt. Scopus serves a large population living in the Northern and Eastern parts of greater Jerusalem, the Judean Hills, the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea regions. It provides all the necessary clinical services needed to treat pediatric patients  from neonatal to teen years.

In addition to their clinical work, the staff is involved in both clinical and basic research.  The major research focus is placed on understanding the molecular, biochemical and immunological bases of chronic diseases in children as well as on the search for new treatments for specific genetic diseases.

In the Israeli Center for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), we concentrate on studying the molecular basis of CF, designing new drugs and treatments as well as participating in clinical trials.

At the Israeli Center for Familial Dysautonomia, both basic and clinical research programs are pursued. Research involves anatomical, biochemical, physiological, genetic and molecular studies. In addition, a large majority of Israeli patients  as well as some European patients are treated at this Center.

In the Pulmonary Facility, we concentrate on the study of asthma and its treatment by using animal models. In the Israeli Center for Down syndrome, research focuses  on both innovative therapies meant to enhance the capabilities of affected children, and on basic research. Research in Pediatric Neurology and Child Development concentrates on clinical, pathological, biochemical and molecular correlations of neuromuscular disorders and mitochondrial disorders. The main focus is placed on autism and mental retardation as well as on the study of Tourette syndrome and Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. In addition, neurofetal studies and research on epilepsy and developmental neurology are carried out.

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Neonatology provides care and treatment to 9,000-10,000 newborn infants who are delivered annually at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centers Mount Scopus and Ein Kerem.

A regular Level I Nursery of 30 cribs and an Intermediate Level II Nursery of 8-10 beds are located at each of the two locations. The Level III Intensive Care Unit (9 beds) is located at Mount Scopus and provides care to more than 200 sick infants born annually at both hospitals. Thus, premature or sick babies born at Ein Kerem and requiring intensive care are transported by a neonatologist to the NICU at Mount Scopus.

The department activities are mainly clinical and also focus on teaching students and residents. Clinical research is conducted in collaboration with other departments in the hospital.
