INTRODUCTION

The Department of Pathology has a number of laboratories, some involved in pure research, others combining clinical research with basic sciences.

Research in the department involves the study of disease processes and the pathogenesis of human disease utilizing diverse methodologies and models. These include morphological studies, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, cDNA arrays, tissue arrays, HPLC, and ELISA as well as conventional biochemical and molecular biology techniques. Disease models employed in various research fields include cell culture systems, animal models (transgenic animals, carcinogen studies, animal models for viral disease, etc.) and studies involving human tissues. The main research interests in the department are:

The link between inflammation and cancer.

Pathogenic mechanisms in viral disease with a special interest in HIV research, mainly aimed at understanding the role of vif in HIV virulence.

Pathogenetic mechanisms involving beta-amyloid deposition and emanating from its deposition in Alzheimer's disease.

The involvement of imprinted genes in placental development and implantation, as well as in neoplastic processes.

Pathologic and genetic aspects of radiation-induced brain tumors.

The role of enzymes involved in modulation of the extra cellular matrix in neoplastic processes.

Development of computer-based systems for objective assessment of morphological and cytological parameters.

The role of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and the role of 17-hydroxycholesterol in the regulation of cholesterol homeostasis.

Fetal programming of adult disease in intrauterine growth restriction.
