INTRODUCTION
The Sharett Institute of Oncology provides comprehensive treatment and conducts clinical research programs of radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and immunotherapy, for the whole spectrum of human malignant neoplasia. Clinical facilities consist of a 32-bed in-patient department, an Out-Patient Day Care for the administration of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, where up to 100 patients receive treatment per day; radiation therapy and brachytherapy units treating 100 patients per day, Out-Patient Clinic for follow-up of cancer patients and high-risk individuals, as well as a Psycho-Oncology Unit. Special multidisciplinary programs in neuro-oncology, breast cancer, G.I. tumors, head and neck and urology are organized with other hospital departments
.
The Unit of Psycho-Oncology provides group relaxation, Karate, couples therapy, family intervention and individual psychological and behavioral therapy. The newly established Oncogenetic Clinic provides counseling and follow-up for population at high risk for cancer development.
The Radiotherapy Unit is equipped with three state-of-the-art computerized linear accelerator, with both dual-energy pheton and wide spectrum electron capabilities. Conformal precision radiation therapy using 3-dimensional radiation treatment planning systems is available and is used to treat a wide variety of tumor types. The unit is equipped with a modern CT simulator as well as a fully digitized conventional simulator. The whole process of radiotherapy, from planning and simulation to daily treatment delivery is computer-controlled and a thorough quality assurance program is applied. The Radiotherapy Unit also offers brachytherapy treatments (interstitial and intracavitary) delivered with an automatic remote afterloading system. Intra-operative radiation therapy is available in full collaboration with the Hadassah Oncology surgeons.
The Unit of Experimental Oncology has active research programs in cancer biology, metastasis and angiogenesis, human tumor immunology and immunotherapy, tumor markers, cancer genetics, tumor vaccination, and radiobiology. Most of the research is oriented towards clinical problems. In general, the unit acts as a link and mediator between the basic sciences involved in cancer research and clinical oncology of human neoplasia.
