INTRODUCTION

The Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery provides diagnostic and treatment (medical and surgical) services to hospitalized patients as well as in the outpatient clinic. All the fields and sub-specialties of our discipline are covered: otology, neurotology (including cochlear implantation), base of skull surgery, head & neck oncology, laryngology, rhinology (functional & aesthetic), endoscopic surgery, image guided navigation surgery, endoscopy and pediatric otolaryngology. The department uses the most sophisticated diagnostic and surgical instruments (e.g., recording of auditory and vestibular evoked potentials, recording of otoacoustic emissions, sophisticated vestibular function tests, laryngostroboscopy, rhinomanometry, use of various types of lasers, etc.).

Research is being conducted in the following areas: Otology/Neurootology:

1. An ongoing research on the induction and recording of vestibular evoked potentials to acceleration impulses in experimental animals and in humans is being performed. In the present stage, the technical details of the method are being refined to enable its routine use in clinical  evaluation of the vestibular system.

2. Early detection of congenital deafness by sophisticated diagnostic method and early treatment by cochlear implantation.

3. Various research projects relating to the physiology of the vestibular system.

4. Evaluation of multiple factors in patients with sudden deafness.

Laryngology:

1. Induction of upper airway stenosis in an animal model and evaluation of various treatment modalities.

2. Imaging of obstructing airway lesion ("Virtual bronchoscopy").

3. Recording of electrical activity in laryngeal and pharyngeal muscles in various pathological conditions.

4. Mechanics of pharyngeal musculature.

5. Treatment of snoring and sleep apnea syndrome. Head & Neck Oncology: Evaluation of tumor markers in various head & neck tumors.

SPEECH & HEARING CENTER

The Speech and Hearing Disorders Center was founded by Mrs. Lilly Tell in 1956. Evaluation and treatment for hearing, speech and swallowing disorders are available for people of all ages. The Center is well known in Israel and around the world for unique evaluation and therapy programs, such as the screening program for early detection of hearing loss, evaluation and therapy for stuttering and for voice disorders, and hearing habilitation through hearing aids and cochlear implants.

The staff includes 17 experienced Audiologist and Speech Pathologist professionals, most with a Master's degree or Ph.D., who are also involved in teaching and research. A branch of the institute is located at the Hadassah Academic College so that students may have practical experience in the clinic.
