INTRODUCTION

The Department Oral Medicine provides teaching and clinical services in the following areas of oral medicine: diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic orofacial pain, oral mucosal and salivary gland lesions; dental and oral care of medically compromised patients; radiological diagnosis of the maxillofacial and oral regions.

The Department provides dental treatment for patients at Hadassah University Hospital and its out-patient clinic, is clinically involved in the treatment of problems arising from the direct connection between the patient’s general health status and oral conditions.

Main research topics are directed toward immediate clinical applications and include: early signs of disease in the oral cavity and possible relations between oral infection and septicemia in leukemia patients: Prevention of bleeding in hemophiliacs, including the antifibrinolytic effect of saliva; The use of nitrous oxide analgesia in patients with severe neurological problems; the use of antiviral agent Acyclovir for preventing Herpes virus infections in patients with leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; monitoring immune system reconstitution and early detection of graft-vs.-host disease via salivary immunoglobulins.
