INTRODUCTION

 

Medical Engineering applies the concepts, knowledge, and techniques of virtually all engineering disciplines to solve specific problems in medicine and biology.

 

The roles of the Medical Engineering and Instrumentation Division include mainly the activities associated with the "life-cycle” of medical equipment as well as research and development activities.

The former activities include: (1) technology assessment; (2) pre-purchase evaluation of medical equipment; (3) facility design and project management; (4) disqualification of medical equipment; (5) training of clinical engineering staff as well as clinical staff on the operation of medical equipment; (6) control of ‘acceptance tests’ and ‘acceptance process’ as defined in the sales agreement; (7) maintenance; (8) risk management; and (9) assisting in formulating sales and service agreements.

 

The research and development activities include: (1) detection and measurement of physiological signals and parameters; (2) design of biomedical instrumentation for clinical and research applications; (3) analysis of biological signals by computers; (4) Picture Archiving Communication Systems (PACS); (5) telemedicine and teleradiology; (6) the contractile mechanism and models of muscle contraction; (7) assessment of myocardial contractility of the ejecting heart and its application to man; (8) excitation contraction coupling and interval-strength relationships in mammalian cardiac muscles; (9) mechanisms of mechanical alterations in the cardiac muscle and in the beating heart; (10) analysis of the transient hemodynamic response of the beating heart by using an original difference equation method; (11) chaos and its application to the heart; and (12) a computerized pressure algometer.
