INTRODUCTION

The Department of General Surgery is involved in a variety of clinical and laboratory projects. Basic research is conducted at the Laboratory of Experimental Surgery (see separate section) and also through collaboration with leading laboratories at the medical school with focus on surgical residents' participation.  Research areas include: 1. Molecular –based research with focus on liver regeneration, vascular biology and cancer gene therapy. 2. Applied research including the development of novel minimal invasive and robotic technologies and virtual reality-based training.  Clinical research studies include research in civilian- and terrorism-related trauma, colorectal diseases and participation in clinical studies including a multi-center trial evaluating the efficiency and safety of activated recombined Factor VII in the treatment of bleeding in severely injured trauma patients and the role of non-operative management of splenic injuries.
