INTRODUCTION
The Department of Dermatology has a number of specific clinics and laboratories, some involved in pure research, while others combining research with clinical services.
Contact Dermatitis Clinic: Patch tests for patients with contact dermatitis and occupational dermatoses; research on metal sensitivity, cosmetic allergy and diagnostic methods relating to occupational skin diseases.
Dermato-Oncology Clinic: Diagnosis and treatments of melanoma, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and other skin malignancies; Mohs Surgery for complicated basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and Bowen’s disease; studies on genetics of skin cancer; computerized follow-up of patients with dysplastic moles, or a family history of melanoma.
Hair Clinic: Diagnosis and treatment for a range of diseases of the hair; research into the genetics & etiology of hair disorders; Center for alopecia areata study and treatment.
Leprosy Center: Follow-up of leprosy patients; studies into the epidemiology of leprosy within leprosy patient family members and communities; incorporation of M. Leprae PCR into clinical evaluation, correlation for states and ethnic origin.
Pediatric Dermatology Clinic: The provision of diagnostic, clinical and surgical services for children with various skin diseases.
Photodermatology Clinic: Diagnosis of photosensitivity disorders and therapy of various UV sensitive skin diseases using advanced phototherapy equipment including solar simulator, UVA, UVB, UVA-1, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) lamps.
Psoriasis Clinic: Routine treatments by means of traditional and more innovative remedies; clinical research focusing on improving the efficacy of new biologic treatments for psoriasis via combination with traditional treatments.
Ulcer Clinic: Treatment of a variety of hard to heal wounds including venous, arterial, pressure and post-traumatic ulcers; clinical studies on new agents for regulating and improving the healing of these wounds; enhancement of wound healing applying unique instruments, methods (e.g., maggot biotherapy) and dressings.
Fungus Laboratory: The diagnosis of fungal diseases by rapid direct microscopy and fungal isolation; research and development of advanced methods for diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology of fungal diseases.
Immunofluorescence Laboratory: Diagnostic services for bullous and vascular diseases.
Investigative Dermatology Laboratory: Research on mechanisms and protection against sun damage.
Leishmaniasis Laboratory: Advanced diagnostic services for leishmaniasis; clinical and basic studies on leishmaniasis epidemiology and treatment.
Molecular Dermatology Laboratory: Provision of diagnostic and research facilities for various inherited skin and hair diseases; integral part of the Center for genetic skin and hair diseases.
