INTRODUCTION

The Department of Community Dentistry is concerned with examining levels of dental health and disease within the Israeli community, analyzing the variables associated with these distributions and planning programs aimed at promoting oral health in Israeli communities.

The Department is affiliated with the Jerusalem Municipality Public Health Division and is responsible for outreach oral health promotion programs among infants in Mother and Child Health centers and among school children in primary schools. The Department is also affiliated with Yad Sarah, where it is involved in the planning, monitoring and implementation of the geriatric dental clinic.  Department staff is involved in conducting on-going dental health surveys in the Israel Defense Forces Medical Corps.

Research in the Department of Community Dentistry focuses on the epidemiology of oral disease in Israel; the relationship between oral diseases and environmental, microbiological, behavioral and other factors; the changing prevalence of oral health within the Israeli population; the effect of dental health education on oral health; preventive dentistry methodologies; clinical trials of new preventive dental products and monitoring and promotion of water fluoridation.
