פרופ' רפאל בן אוליאל למד רפואת שיניים באוניברסיטת לונדון ובהמשך השתלם בכירורגיה פה ולסת.

סיים את ההתמחות ברפואת הפה בבית הספר לרפואת שיניים של האוניברסיטה העברית והדסה.

בהמשך השתלם במכוני הבריאות האמריקאים NIH במחקר בסיסי במנגנוני כאב.

התמנה למנהל המחלקה לרפואת הפה בפברואר 2003 ומשמש גם כמנהל המרכז המזרח תיכוני ללימודי המשך ברפואת שיניים.

עוסק במחקר וטיפול בכאב פנים. כולל כאבי ראש, הפרעות במערכת הלעיסה ובמפרק הטמפורומנדיבולרי (TMJ).
