חברי סגל מחלקת עיניים מבצעים הן מחקר בסיסי והן מחקר קליני. המחקרים מבוצעים בעיקר במעבדות מחלקת עיניים, אך גם בשיתוף פעולה עם מעבדות אחרות בפקולטה לרפואה ובביה"ח הדסה ועם מחלקות אחרות בארץ ובעולם.
שלוש קבוצות מחקר עוסקות בחקר מחלות ניווניות של הרשתית והמקולה ולבקנות, הן במחקרים בסיסיים והן במחקרים קליניים. המחקרים הקליניים הם ברמה המולקולרית, כולל גנטיקה מולקולרית, אלקטרופיזיולוגיה וטיפולים ניסיוניים.
חלוקת תאים ברקמה הנורמלית ובגידולים תוך-עיניים וחוץ-עיניים, עם וללא טיפול, נחקרת במחלקתנו מזה שנים. בתחום האונקולוגיה של העין מטרת המחקרים היא, בין היתר, למצוא הבדלים בין מלנומה ראשונית של הענביה לגרורותיה, ולפתח סמנים ביולוגיים לאיתור מוקדם של גרורות, ממלנומה של הענביה.
בתחום הקרנית ופני שטח העין, מתבצע מחקר בהבנת תהליכי דלקת וצלקת של רקמות משטח העין (הקרנית והלחמית); שיטות לאיפיון וריבוי של תאי אב אפיתליאליים לצורך השתלה במצבי חסר תאי הגובלת של הקרנית; חיפוש ומחקר של תרופות נוגדות דלקת, שימוש בממברנה האמניוטית ועוד.
בתחום הגלאוקומה, עיקר המחקרים עוסקים בשיטות להערכת פגיעה ברקמות הרשתית באמצעים טכנולוגיים שונים, ופיתוח מכשור אבחנתי וטיפולי.
מחקרים אחרים במחלקתנו מבוצעים בתחומי עיניים-ילדים, נוירואופתלמולוגיה, דלקות עיניות, גנטיקה של מחלות עיניים, לייזרים ברפואת עיניים וניתוחי תשבורת.
