Prof. Rachmilewitz was born in 1935 in Israel and graduated the Hebrew University Medical School in 1961. He completed his hematology specialty and was appointed as head of the Hematology Service in Mt. Scopus in 1975. In 1981 he was appointed Director of the Hematology Department in Ein-Kerem where he served until his retirement in April 2000.
During this period of time, Prof. Rachmilewitz was very active in the local as well as in the international medical community. His reputation all over the world brought into practice new therapeutic treatments for our department. Numerous patients from all over Israel and neighboring countries seeking advanced medical care have sought his consultation.
Prof. Rachmilewitz has excelled not only in patient care but has nurtured a new generation of young hematologists who are at the forefront of the hematological community in nearly every hospital in Israel and abroad, from the Palestinian Authority to Ethiopia and even to The United States.
Prof. Rachmilewitz is a renowned expert on Thalassemia. He actively organized congresses both in Israel and abroad and was an invited speaker at scores of international meetings on the subject of this widespread genetic disease. He pioneered modern therapy of this disease including adequate blood transfusion, iron chelation, and other essential services such as prenatal diagnosis, which was first established in this department. Owing to his efforts, Israel is among the countries worldwide with the highest standard of care for Thalassemia. His many publications on this subject were widely read and quoted.
After Prof. Rachmilewitz’s retirement from Hadassah in April 2000, he has been serving as Director of Hematology at the Edith Wolfson Hospital in Holon.
