Hadar Merhav MD graduated from the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical School in 1983.
He completed his residency in general surgery under Professor Reuben Pfeffermann in Kaplan Hospital in 1989. He then went to Pittsburgh for a two year fellowship in organ transplantation under the direction of Professor Thomas Starzl.
He then served as a senior surgical fellow in charge of the ICU at UPMC. In 1992 he moved to Oklahoma City and was a partner in setting up the first liver transplant center in that state at the Oklahoma Transplantation Institute.
In 1995 he joined the surgical team at the Tel Aviv Medical Center as director of liver surgery unit and was responsible for starting the liver transplantation program and was a partner in the creation of the transplantation unit.
In 2002 he moved to Houston as an associate professor of surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center and associate director of the liver transplant program.
In 2009 he joined the Department of Surgery in Hadassah as Director of the Transplantation Unit. Dr. Merhav performed more than 300 liver transplants and participated in hundreds of other transplant procedures. Additionally he performed hundreds of hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures and was the first to introduce laparoscopic pancreatic and liver resections to Hadassah.
