Department of Hematology
Hadassah University Hospital
Jerusalem, Israel
Professor Eitan Fibach was born in Israel in 1944.
He earned his PhD degree in 1975 from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rechovot, Israel, working with the legendary scholar Prof. Leo Sachs.
After a 3 year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Marks (who is currently the President of Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City), Prof. Fibach returned to Israel and joined Hadassah’s Hematology Department.
He concentrated on the study of hematopoiesis, and devised several clinically important tests for polycythemia. He also is in charge of the flow cytometry laboratory which is part of our department, providing diagnostic tests as well as research studies.
He has studied the differentiation of red blood cells and has devised methods for testing the response of pathological blood cells (such as those of sickle cell anemia or thalassemia) to various drugs which may be given for amelioration of the anemia. This project was developed in collaboration with investigators from the National Institutes of Health in the United States.
In addition, he studied leukemia cell biology, and has a very important ongoing research project on the factors which cause differentiation of leukemic cells. Finally, he has for many years been studying stem cells, and his most recent, highly significant project is one in which he is studying the means for expanding hematopoietic stem cells, for the purposes of bone marrow transplantation.
Prof. Fibach’s laboratory is an intergral part of the research and clinical services of the Hematology Department, and it provides invaluable clinical diagnostic services and well as being in the forefront of research which will impact on the lives of many patients with hematological disorders.
