Management of Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence or urine leakage is sometimes a major problem in terms of the quality of life. It is a very common problem for elderly men and women.

Children and adults who suffer from neurological diseases or spinal problems may also experience urinary frequency urgency and significant urinary incontinence. Many women often suffer from stress urinary incontinence as a result of gynecological operations or after multiple labors.

Treatment of urinary incontinence may be offered by family physicians, physiotherapists, gynecologists, urologists and experts in geriatrics. However, since there are many different reasons for the involuntary leakage of urine,  the success of treatments depends entirely on the correct diagnosis.

Incontinence may occur as a result of neurological and spinal diseases or due to malfunction of the urinary bladder that cause involuntary contractions of the bladder and lead to urinary urgency and urgency incontinence.

Longstanding obstruction of the bladder or flaccid paralysis of the urinary bladder may result in urinary retention and overflow of urine from the distended bladder. Total urinary incontinence is caused sometimes by the malfunction of the urinary sphincter or leakage through abnormal fistulae, the results of surgical complications.

Urine leakage caused by a sudden increase of the abdominal pressure, such as during cough or exercise, is reffered as stress urinary incontinence. This is the result of anatomical changes that occur following pelvic surgery or multiple deliveries. Mild stress incontinence may be treated by physiotherapy. More significant stress incontinence usually requires a minimal surgical procedure.

However, there are different solutions for the various kinds of urinary incontinence including medications, physiothearpy, electrical stimulation, surgial procedures, or implantation of artificial sphincters.

The key for a successful treatment is the correct evaluation, including physical examination, imaging, radiological examinations and urodynamic studies by an expert in the field of neuro-urology and female urology.

The Department of urology offers to children, men and women who suffer from urinary incontinence, a full work up for the diagnosis and the most modern medical and surgical solutions for the problem.
