Early Detection of Urological Tumors

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. This disease can be cured only if diagnosed and treated at an early stage while the tumor is still confined to the prostate. Since the early 1990s, new screening tests and improved treatments have been associated with dramatic increase in the early detection of prostate cancer, and it seems that the mortality of this disease has decreased.

The most important development regarding prostate cancer in the last 20 is  years is the discovery of  PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) as a marker for early detection of prostate cancer in blood tests. It is therefore recommended that every man, aged 50 or more, should have an annual rectal examination of the prostate gland and a blood test for PSA.

Since men with a family history of prostate cancer are prone to develop prostate cancer at an earlier age, it is recommended that any men whose father or brother had prostate cancer should be examined once a year from the age of 40 years.

Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is the 4th most common cancer among men. It is less common in women. Cigarette smoking as well as exposure to various carcinogens at work are the most common causes for the development of bladder cancer. 80% of the patients with bladder cancer have low grade malignancy, superficial tumors, that can be treated by endoscopic surgery via the urethra, leaving the urinary bladder intact. If a highly malignant tumor that invades the bladder muscle is found, the most effective treatment is radical surgery which requires the removal of the urinary bladder.

At this stage the disease may be cured in only 50% of the cases. Once the cancer had spread beyond the urinary bladder it can be treated only with chemotherapy and in most cases it can not be cured. It is therefore important to diagnose bladder cancer at an early stage. Most patients with bladder cancer seek medical attention only when symptoms such as bloody urine occur. It is sometimes too late. Men and women, after the age of 40 years, that have smoked cigarettes for many years or have been exposed to chemicals at work such as in petrol, plastic or rubber industries should be encouraged to have annual tests for early detection of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer may be detected by simple non-invasive techniques such as special urine tests and bladder ultrasound.

Kidney Cancer

The majority of solid renal tumors are malignant. Kidney cancer can be cured only if it is localized and if it is removed completely by surgery. Although it accounts for only 3% of all adult malignancies, it is the most lethal of the urologic cancers, since  large renal tumors tend to spread.

Once metastases have been developed the cancer is incurable. However, it is rare for a tumor smaller than 4 cm in diameter to spread into lymph nodes or to other organs.

Small kidney tumors do not cause symptoms and they can be found only by imaging tests such as ultrasound.

The Urology Clinic at Hadassah Ein Karem offers non invasive tests for early detection of urologic malignancies at low prices.
