Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. It can be cured only if diagnosed early, while the tumor is still confined to the prostate gland. At this stage the treatment options are: radical surgery (removing the entire prostate and seminal vesicles), external radiotherapy or interstitial radiation by implantation of radioactive seeds into the prostate.
A new technology that has been developed during the last decade is cryotherapy or freezing of the prostate, using electrodes that deliver very low temperatures into the prostate. The procedure is done under regional or general anesthesia. The prostate is freezed and thawed several times during one treatment session. The physical effect of freezing and thawing results in complete destruction of the tissue including the malignant growth within the prostate.
Since the results of cryotherapy of the prostate have not been compared to radical surgery or to radiation therapy in randomized prospective clinical trials we offer this therapy to patients that are not candidates for radical surgery and to patients that would prefer cryotherapy over radiation therapy.
