Research
Our Laboratory for Experimental Surgery emphasizes research in areas related to surgery, trauma, critical care, and imaging. The center includes a core facility for molecular-oriented research for investigators from the divisions of surgery, anesthesia, critical care, and radiology; a center for development and testing of novel surgical technologies and techniques; a minimally invasive surgery learning center with basic and advanced training courses using wet and dry lab facilities; an applied radiology lab for development of innovative techniques for assessment of minimally invasive guided therapies; and a state-of-the-art surgical facility for small and large animal research staffed with trained animal caretakers and technicians.
We plan to bring in a PhD research director in the near future. Senior physicians and residents from the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesia, Medicine, Plastic & Reconstructive Medicine, Orthopedics and more are conducting clinical and applied research in the laboratory, and we have begun to see publications from the work.
Major corporations including Ethicon (Johnson & Johnson), Olympus, and Stroz have donated innovative instruments for evaluation. The laboratory was established with private contributions, however we expect to begin to attract competitive funding in the next several years as we accumulate significant preliminary results from our early work.
