Portal Hypertension
Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Bile Duct Diseases and
Budd Chiari Syndrome
VIR provides minimally invasive treatments applicable in a wide range of liver disease including portal hypertension, Budd-Chiari syndrome, biliary diseases, as well as primary and secondary liver cancers. Therapies that are routinely performed include TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt), transjugular liver biopsy, balloon venoplasty and stenting, biliary drainage and stenting, tumor embolization and chemoembolization, and radiofrequency ablation.
Example 1:
A 55 year old patient with life threatening hemorrhage from varices (varicose veins) in the stomach, that could not be controlled by endoscopy. A TIPS procedure was performed using only a 3mm incision in the neck and creating a shunt within the liver that reduced the high blood pressure causing collapse of the varices and cessation of hemorrhage, saving the patients life.
Example 2:
A 55 year old patient with primary bile duct cancer (figure 1: CT scan, arrow), jaundice, itching and loss of appetite, underwent evaluation but was unable to undergo a surgical resection or endoscopic drainage. Using a minimally invasive approach metal stents were placed (figure 2: curved arrow) to provide internal drainage of bile. The patient's symptoms resolved and he was able to proceed with oncological therapy.
