Do you Suffer from Depression?

There is help -

New Clinical Research

Depression is the most common and disabling mood disorder, especially amongst women. It can cause significant suffering and impairment of function in various areas of one’s life, including, work, pleasure and interpersonal relationships.

The pharmacological treatment for depression  is based on the utilization of antidepressants from the SSRI family.  Even with optimal dosage and duration of treatment, 50% of patients will remain significantly symptomatic and will need some additional treatment.

Apart from that, one can expect a lag period of 2-3 weeks between the initiation of treatment and the clinical response.  Research has shown that the use of thyroid hormone (T3) can hasten the clinical response and also increase the percentage of patients who will respond to antidepressant medication. This research was conducted at Hadassah Hospital by Dr. Rena Cooper, Head of the Psychiatry Clinic, Hadassah Ein Karem and Prof Lerer, Director, Biological Psychiatry Unit Department of Psychiatry, Hadassah Ein Karem. These results were published in the international medical literature.

The current research is a continuation of the previous research. The aim is to find out the appropriate timing of administering the T3, and to try and identify those patients more likely to respond to the addition of T3.

We are looking for volunteers, men and women between the ages of 18-70 who suffer from depression. All volunteers will be initially assessed. If found to be suitable, they will be offered participation in the study for a 12 week duration. All participants will be under close medical supervision by the study doctor, Dr. Aviva Cohen, and medications will be provided free of charge. At the conclusion of the study, participants will be offered the option of continuation of treatment in the outpatient psychiatric clinic, depending on the clinical need.
