The clinic personnel include a senior neurologist, Dr. Zeev Meiner who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias; Dr Yehoshua Ne'eman, a senior clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in the evaluation, assessment and rehabilitation of neurocognitive disorders; Esther Shickler, a nurse-coordinator of clinical services and research; Ronit Eizenberg, a social worker specialized in the need of patients and famillied affected by Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. We also train neurology residents who are gaining knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of dementia and other neurogeriatric disorders.

The Memory Disorders Clinic carries out 500 to 700 patient visits per year, including 350 Alzheimer's disease patients who are followed up on a regular basis.  These evaluations include comprehensive neurological and neuropsychological evaluations, imaging studies and laboratory tests.  Detailed summaries are sent to patients and their physicians upon completion of evaluations.  Additionally, patients are treated in follow-up clinic visits. The clinic maintains direct contacts with family physicians, geriatric physicians and day-care facility personnel for dementia patients in the Jerusalem area.

In addition to clinical activities, the Neurogeriatrics and Memory Disorders Clinic maintains an active research program. To date we have participated in four multi-center clinical trials of drugs for treatment of Alzheimer's disease, including Donepezil, Rivastigmine and Phenserine. We are about to undertake our fifth clinical trial this year. We are also carrying out a longitudinal study of neurological and neurocognitive sequelae of Down syndrome in cooperation with the  Down syndrome center in the pediatric departments in our hospital. Post-Polio Rehabilitation

Physiatrist In-charge

Dr. Isabella Schwartz

Goal

Poliomyelitis is a severe viral disease causing paralysis of motor muscles. The diseases was eliminated with the development of the Polio vaccine in 1955, however many survivors are still coping their handicap since then. In Israel there are approximately 10,000 polio survivors, recently a law was passed in the Kneset arranging the national financial support to the survivors.

Many of the polio survivors, now in their 50-60, need help in mobilization including specific equipment such as orthosis and wheel chairs. Many of them are suffering from post-polio syndrome, also referred to as the late effects of polio.

Typical symptoms of post-polio syndrome can include any one or several of the following in varying degrees: Unusual fatigue, new weakness in muscles, both those originally affected by polio and those seemingly unaffected , pain in muscles or joints, sleeping difficulty, breathing problems, swallowing difficulty, decreased ability to tolerate cold temperatures, decline in ability to conduct usual daily activities.

In our polio and post-polio clinics a senior physiatrist with special expertise in polio and post-polio syndrome evaluates each patient and suggests professional recommendation including ordering appropriate equipment (orthosis, wheel chair and more) for the patient's needs.  Polio patients are evaluated in the clinic every 6 months and a customized treatment plans is adjust to each one according to his abilities in order to preserve muscle strength and prevent overuse.

Pain Rehabilitation

Physiatrist In-charge

Dr. Jeanna Tsenter

Goal

The primary goal of the pain and spasticity clinic is to restore function and improve the quality of life for people suffering with chronic pain and spasticity. We specialize in a wide variety of treatment options, including interventational procedures, and physical modelities, which are designed to uncover the root of the pain and to suggest personal customized solution.

We treat patients with sub-acute or chronic pain from variety of reasons including: Cervical and low back pain of any origin,  CRPS type I and II, Phantom pains following amputations, neuropathic pain following peripheral nerve injuries, musculoskeltal pain including Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain.

Spasticity is a condition involving overactive muscle contractions. It can be described as hyperactivity of reflexes that normally protect against sudden stretching of a muscle. This condition can interfere with mobility and performance of activities of daily living. Over time, spasticity may lead to contractures, which involve loss of range of joint motion.

Disorders that may cause spasticity include stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, brain or spinal cord tumors, and other disorders of the central nervous system. Adult patients with spasticity are evaluated in the clinic on an outpatient basis. Treatments offered may include physical and occupational therapies, splinting, medications, and injections. All patients are followed over time to monitor progress and adjust treatment. Injection therapies offered include injection of botulinum toxin, an exciting and relatively new treatment option with fewer side effects than older injection therapies.
