Background
In the world today, the main causes of morbidity and mortality through age 40 are trauma and injuries. In Israel, motor vehicle accidents, terrorist attacks and violence cause the greatest number of casualties, resulting in various types of injuries and trauma.
Injuries to the extremities, pelvis and spinal column represent 70% of the total number of surgical procedures performed on trauma casualties.
A complex injury requires urgent orthopedic treatment, preferably beginning as soon as possible after the injury is incurred. The Orthopedic Trauma Unit is therefore an integral part of Hadassah's Trauma Unit.
Even though orthopedic procedures and surgery in the trauma unit can in part be performed by general orthopedists, orthopedic trauma specialists are needed to treat complex injuries, and complex fractures such as internal joint extremity fractures and fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum.
Fast paced developments in the field require a wide ranging knowledge of complex surgical procedures and innovative techniques which allow for fast and readily available treatment of a variety of injuries.
Medical Problems Treated by the Unit
The orthopedic trauma unit is comprised of an experienced staff, skilled in treating all upper and lower extremity fractures as well as pelvic fractures. The Unit serves as a national referral center for pelvic and acetabular fractures.
Treatment Methods
The Unit's staff is experienced and skilled in treating all types of fractures using all existing fixation methods including intra-medullar nails, plates, and external fixation devices.
The Unit's staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week delivering optimal and professional treatment for all injuries.
The use of innovative technologies, including computer navigation, allows for more precise surgery within smaller sectors with the resulting ability to achieve better results. The Unit's physicians are the world's leading experts in this technology.
The Unit's physicians work in close cooperation with the Hospital's other departments e.g. vascular surgery and plastic surgery, in order to treat complex multi-disciplinary injuries.
The Unit's physicians regularly participate in medical conferences and continuing education programs abroad and are counted among the teaching staff of national and international courses.
