Background
The growth process characterizes infants, children and adolescents and differentiates them from adults. Whether we are referring to congenital, developmental or injury related problems, the constant change in structure and size of the skeletal system and muscles requires special attention; often significantly different from adult orthopedic problems.
Medical Problems Treated by the Unit
The areas of activity of the Unit include treatment of fractures and various pediatric injuries; congenital defects of the skeletal system; and treatment of bone and joint diseases including tumors and inflammations (in cooperation with other physicians in the Department who specialize in these problems).
The most prevalent activities include: congenital dislocation of the hip joint using ultrasound follow-up; treatment of club-foot, a prevalent defect in children's feet; lengthening of limbs; comparing limb length; repair of distortions following fractures; infections, and other inflammations.
Treatment Methods
The Unit offers its services at both Hadassah campuses, Ein Kerem and Mount Scopus, with most elective procedures being performed in the Mother and Child Center at Ein Kerem where Hadassah's pediatric care is centralized.
The Unit's physicians use advanced techniques in order to achieve the best results.
For example, the Ponseti Method is used in treating club-foot, significantly minimizing the need to perform complex surgical procedures. In treating limb deformity or unequal foot length, an external ring fixation device known as the Illizarov apparatus (named after a Russian surgeon) is used. The method provides a solution to some of the most complex pediatric orthopedic problems that in the past required amputations or bracing. The use of this method is coordinated by the Unit and is sometimes used as a solution for adult problems.
Recently, a computerized element to this approach was added with the development of a fixation system based on computerized data (Taylor Spatial Frame).
The Unit's physicians regularly update their knowledge through their participation in national and international conferences.
