The graduate course in Orthodontics, at the Faculty of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, is academically oriented. The aims of specialty study in Orthodontics are to provide the graduate student with a sound knowledge of growth and development, etiologic factors of malocclusion and an appreciation of the broad spectrum of diagnostic aids that are needed in the recognition of specific malocclusions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the different approaches to clinical treatment (fixed, removable and functional appliances), underlining the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Teaching will be given in the form of lectures, seminars, demonstrations, clinical presentations and clinical chairside teaching on patients with various types of malocclusion (including clefts, handicapped patients and a clinic for combined orthodontic-surgical treatments). Considerable weight is given to self-teaching from assigned reading material.
Upon completion of the requirements for specialization to the satisfaction of the Department, the graduate student will be entitled to make application for the specialty examinations, under the auspices of the Scientific Committee of the Israel Dental Association, in order to be recognized as a Specialist in Orthodontics (see below).
