45th Anniversary

The Orthodontic Department of the Hebrew University Dental School celebrated its 45th Anniversary in honor of Prof. Edith Kaye, the first Chairperson of the program.

A well attended symposium was held at the Butner Hall in the Hadassah Medical Center, Ein Kerem campus on January 20-21st 2011, with guest lecturers Professor Birte Melsen, Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics, the Royal Dental College, Aarhus, Denmark since 1975 and Dr. Marcel Korn, Department of Orthodontics, Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

At the opening ceremony, the audience was welcomed by Dr. Yair Birnbaum, Associate Director General and Head of Medical Services at the Hadassah Medical Organization, Prof. Adam Stabholz, Dean of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine and Prof. Stella Chaushu, Chairperson of its Orthodontic Department.  Prof. Chaushu thanked the former chairpersons of the Department - Prof. Edith Kaye, Prof. Shulamit Steigman, Prof. Yerucham Zilberman, Prof. Ilana Brin and Dr. Yocheved  Ben Basset (interim chairperson) as well as Prof. Becker for his substantial contribution to the Department and Judi Brezniak of Orthostat Ltd, the representative of American Orthodontics in Israel, who  sponsored this event.

The topic of the symposium was “Contemporary Anchorage in Orthodontics” (“TADS” versus RADS”).  Temporary anchorage devices or “TADS” (mini-screws) have developed to combat non-compliance issues and to enhance orthodontic mechanics in many situations. Removable anchorage devices or “RADS” have existed for many years and offered the effects of functional appliances along with anchorage control.

Professor Melsen presented well illustrated lectures under the heading of “Fixed anchorage systems in Orthodontics” and Dr. Korn regarding “Removable Anchorage Systems in Orthodontics”.  These two exceptional clinicians lectured alternately during the 2-day event, each devoting their lectures to their clinical systems. The high level of interdisciplinary expertise shown in these presentations was applauded by the audience, which was made up of 185 faculty members and graduate students from various specialties, including Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, and Oral Surgery, who were joined by alumni of the specialty program of the Orthodontic Department.

Later that evening, a gala Alumni evening was held, with 62 graduates of the department in attendance. After a cocktail dinner we enjoyed the music of Moni & Larry in a Tribute to the Songs of Simon and Garfunkel, in an atmosphere filled with joy, cohesiveness and celebration.

We, in the Department of Orthodontics are very happy and proud of the outcome of our 45th Anniversary Celebration and look forward to a grand 50th celebration.
