The Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, headed by Prof. Jacob Pe'er, was the first such laboratory in Israel and is today the leading one. Two technicians are working in this Laboratory.
Surgical specimens from Hadassah University Hospital as well as from other hospitals in Israel are processed in this Laboratory. Consultations are referred by pathologists from other hospitals. About 600 surgical specimens are examined each year. The Laboratory provides routine stainings as well as immuno-staining services.
In addition to clinical services, the Laboratory serves also the researchers of the Department of Ophthalmology. Researchers of our Department are using this Laboratory for histological services needed in their research projects. Many students have performed their M.D. studies in this Lab, and residents from our Department as well as from other departments and from abroad spend time in this Lab.
The research projects of Prof. Pe'er, who heads the Laboratory, are on ocular cell proliferation. They include studies on intraocular and ocular adnexal tumors, intraocular neovascularization, and cell proliferation in the normal eye. The long list of publications that have come out of this Lab are proof of the high quality and efficiency of the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory.
