To See Without Glasses
Only people wearing eye glasses can understand the daily burden they cause. Simple activities like running, jumping, swimming, become a real burden when one just wants to avoid the glasses to fall down or is busy cleaning them from the steam from a cup of coffee.
In the last two decades various attempts to correct eye sight by surgery were carried out. In the last decade, with the evolution of the laser devices, a revolutionary method was developed: The Lasik method for the improvement of vision, which was used successfully on thousands of people all around the world, resolving their need of wearing eye glasses.
Lasik – What is it exactly?
The Lasik method is, nowadays, the most advanced treatment for the improvement of the vision by laser. The method is accurate, sure, painless and its treatment lasts only a few minutes.
During the laser operation procedure, an accurate cut of the corneal "cap" (20 micron thickness) is performed. An optimal laser beam polishes the cornea carefully and with optimal accuracy. The duration of the beam is measured according to the patient's personal data presented on the computer. After the laser procedure, the polished corneal "cap" is returned to its place and the patient can immediately see without glasses. The act of polishing the cornea varies from patient to patient, but the final result is identical: the cornea gains a new shape and the retinal picture is clear-cut and accurate.
During the laser procedure the patient feels no pain, except for a pressure sensation that can last several seconds. In order to avoid it, in Hadassah, our patients are given a tranquilizer and special eye drops.
Who can benefit from the laser operation?
Prior to this operation, every candidate undergoes a complete examination which aims to establish his personal compatibility to the laser operation.
The lasik operation fits patients with stable myopia or hypermetropia. The method can be applied also to patients with more than one ophthalmic problem.
The method does not fit young people under the age of ???, with thin or distorted cornea, or patients suffering from diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or collagen diseases.
What happens after the Laser operation?
A significant improvement of the vision will be observed immediately after the operation, even seeing the footers on television without eye glasses. Within a few days the visual acuity improves but it becomes stable only in the course of a 3 months period.
It is recommended to avoid unexpected trauma to the operated eye, especially when looking after small children or pets and also refraining from swimming in pools or sea. It is possible to return to work and regular day life on the day following the procedure, including driving cars and practicing sports.
Why is the compatibility examination
so important?
The compatibility examination is important and decisive in order to determine the patient's compatibility to the operation and its percentage of success. If the results are not satisfactory, at Hadassah Optimal we do not perform the operation. Thirty percent of the patients coming to our clinic for the compatibility examinations fail to reach the operation, due to the severe elimination done by the ophthalmologists.
The compatibility examination includes several tests:
A Tomography Examination of the Cornea. This examination reflects the situation of the cornea and its compatibility to the operation.
An Examination by an Optometrist, who checks the visual acuity and performs a refraction examination for glasses prescription.
An Examination by an Ophthalmologist. The examination includes pupil dilatation which allows checking the retina and the optic nerve. He also measures the intraocular pressure and tests the eye's condition regarding dry eye syndrome (lack of tears). Following summary of all medical data, both ophthalmologist and patient meet for a chat about each one's expectations of the outcome, allowing the patient to obtain a full and clear picture concerning the successful result of the operation.
Finally, and after the ophthalmologist has reached the opinion that the patient is fit, beyond doubt, to undergo the operation by laser, he explains all stages of the operation to his patient. At this point, the patient is invited to ask all the questions he can think of, in order to get a complete picture of the operation.
