Teaching in the Department

In the past several years Oncology has been added to the list of compulsory rotations for 5th year medical students.

We see this development as an essential and positive step and one which we whole-heartedly welcome.

Unfortunately as cancer incidence rises it is increasingly important for future doctors to be exposed to cancer patients, patients who they will undoubtedly need to treat in whichever field of medicine they chose to pursue in the future.

Whilst it is true that cancer patients are also encountered in other departments e.g. surgery, internal medicine, we believe that only within Machon-sharett itself can the student be exposed to a diversity of patients and treatments and gain a preliminary understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of our work.

Students undertake a two week rotation where we place emphasis on the importance of a holistic approach to the treatment of cancer patients.  The course therefore aims to incorporate all the essential components of treatment within its' timetable including psychologic evaluation and follow-up, social aspects of the disease as well as a basic medial education  The rotation combines traditional lectures with much bed-side experience and patient interviewing and students spend time in all the different departments within the institute.

It is of great importance to all the staff within Machon-sharett to contribute to the education of future doctors.  We aim to expose the students to the wide spectrum of our patient population from those suffering end-stage disease, those cured of their disease and those living with active disease and on-going treatments for significant periods of time.

It is our experience that students gain an incredible amount from their time in our department, dispelling misconceptions and almost always gaining new insights into the far reaching effects of cancer.

Students who enjoy the rotation are welcomed to partake in a voluntary 6th year elective program within Machon-sharett and students also chose to take advantage of the many research projects available to them.

We continue to view the education of our students with the utmost importance and welcome them all to experience fist-hand the ever changing sphere of Oncology.
