Supportive Treatment and Pain Center

Supportive Treatment

and Pain Center

Dr. Dalia Galinski.

The Sharett Institute of Oncology has made it a goal to constantly improve the service provided for patients. In this spirit, the Institute is currently establishing a Supportive Treatment and Pain Center.

Supportive treatment is a broad term referring to available therapies that improve the patient’s quality of life, with particular attention with the goal of alleviating the symptoms of cancer or of treatment.

Supportive treatment takes place alongside treatment of the underlying disease, but on a separate track, and is provided by a multidisciplinary team. We believe that it is preferable to provide this service within the same framework that provides treatment for the underlying diseases. Integrating supportive treatment in the therapeutic system for the underlying disease enables communication and contact between the different people providing treatment and helps give the patient and their family a sense of security during the different stages of the disease.

The supportive treatment service seeks to provide personal and ongoing treatment through a team including psychologists, social workers, nurses, and physicians. Treatment is usually provided during clinic visits, although in some cases the team recommends admission to the oncology ward in order to balance the symptoms and provide more intensive treatment under full supervision. The team also provides an available response over the telephone for urgent problems.

The supportive treatment service team cooperates with and draws on the services of the community health services.

In an era in which innovative treatments and early diagnosis are enabling oncology patients to enjoy longevity, there is a profound need for constant attention to the problems that accompany the disease. Through the supportive treatment service, a devoted and available team provides an additional, personal response to these problems.
