The Rosalie Goldberg Department of Neonatology provides care and treatment for 8,500 newborn infants who are delivered annually in the Hadassah Hospitals at Mount Scopus and Ein Kerem.

The care of these babies is divided into three levels of treatment according to the medical requirements of the infant.

Level I nursery provides care for normal healthy newborns during the first days of life.

Level II nursery provides care for sick premature newborns who are not considered to be in a precarious state.

Level III nursery provides intensive care to the sickest and smallest newborns (birth weight often below 1,000 grams) who require mechanical ventilation, intravenous hyperalimentation and close monitoring of vital signs.

A regular Level I nursery of 30 cribs and an intermediate Level II nursery of 8-10 beds are located in each of the Hadassah Hospitals. The Level III Intensive Care Unit (8 beds) is located at Mount Scopus and provides care for more than 200 sick infants born annually in both hospitals. Thus, premature or sick babies born in Ein Kerem and require intensive care are transported by a neonatologist to the NICU at Mount Scopus.

Hospitalization of an 800-gram infant after 27 weeks of gestation may last 3-4 months. Following discharge from the hospital a multidisciplinary clinic at Mt. Scopus offers follow-up care during the first 1-2 years of life.

A regular follow-up clinic is in operation at Ein Kerem.
